Governments at all levels have been urged to pay more attention to preventive health care services in Nigeria to reduce the outbreak of communicable diseases in the country.

The National President of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Dr. Samuel Akingbehin, made the appeal at the 50th Annual Scientific Workshop and first International Conference on Environmental Health held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Festac Town, Lagos.

Addressing over 2000 delegates, government officials and resource persons that attended the conference, Dr. Akingbehin regretted the negligence of environmental health service in the country despite its important role in the attainment of sound health for the citizenry.

According to him, Nigerians are at the risk outbreak of more communicable diseases if the present attitude of government and other agencies continues.

He said: “Nigerians have suffered so much health challenges because preventive health care is largely neglected and curative services seriously prioritized, hence disease burdens continue to increase and attainment of health by our people become a mirage.

“The impact of the services of environmental health workers in the country has been lost and eroded because of poor attitude of members of the profession to house-to-house inspection and inspection of regulated premises.

“A critical appraisal of the state of health of our nation reveals that communicable disease outbreak is becoming rampant and diseases burden on increase, which means that a lot needs to be done by government, individuals and corporate organizations in order to change the trends,” he added.
